NSF iUCRC High Voltage and Temperature (HVT) Center Annual Meeting

2018 NSF iUCRC Center on High Voltage/Temperature Materials & Structures annual meeting was held successfully on May 14-16that University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign. Participants from NSF, University of Denver, UIUC, UConn and MichTech as well as from leading companies in power and aerospace industries presented project reviews, poster presentations and new project proposal reviews. Members of IMS Electrical Insulation Research Center (Prof. Yang Cao, JoAnne Ronzello, Mattewos Tefferi, Lihua Chen, Tohid Shahsavarian, Jing Xia, Dat Le, Zongze Li and Jindong Huo) presented their cutting-edge collaborative researches with GE, Eversource, Marmon Utilities, USi and G&W on enabling high voltage technologies development for grid modernization, renewable integration, grid hardening and protections.

2017 Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (CEIDP)

EIRC members Mattewos Tefferi, Zongze Li and Prof. Yang Cao participated the 2017 IEEE Annual Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (CEIDP) in Fort Worth, TX. Graduate student Mattewos Tefferi gave an oral presentation on the topic of Medium Voltage DC insulation. Graduate student Zongze Li presented his recent work in poster on topic of novel aromatic polyurea for high energy density capacitors. This year, WhiteHead lecture was given by former EIRC director Dr. Steven Boggs on ” Research in the Age of Numerical Simulation”.

NSF High Voltage and Temperature(HVT) semi-annual meeting

UCONN successfully hosted NSF/HVT semi-annual meeting October 16-18, 2017. EIRC members give a project update presentation on the topic of HVDC/MVDC cabling-space charge dynamics, HVDC/MVDC ‐ Electronic Structure of Polyolefin, HVDC Grid Hardening against Geomagnetic Disturbance (GMD), Discharge Resistant Materials for Circuit Breaker and Photo‐acoustic Based Dissolved Gas Analysis.  Mattewos’s poster on “Critical comparative study on EPR and XLPE for medium voltage cable” got first place award and Jing’s poster on “Discharge resistant materials for circuit breaker” got third place award in the poster competition. Congratulations Mattewos and Jing!

NSF High Voltage and Temperature(HVT) annual meeting

All EIRC members participated in the NSF annual meeting held in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Mona Ghassemi and graduate student Mattewos Tefferi gave a nice oral presentation on the topic of HVDC Grid Hardening against Geomagnetic Disturbance (GMD) and HVDC/MVDC cabling-space charge dynamics. Mattewos’s poster on HVDC/MVDC system got second place award in the poster competition.
